VACANCY FOR PART-TIME CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
15 hours weekly, worked flexibly with the Cathedral Office, Peel as the base
Reporting to the Dean, the Chief Operating Officer acts as clerk and overseer to the Cathedral staff. They are responsible for the overall administration of Cathedral life. Their responsibilities are assisting staff in development, finance, events, health & safety, HR, property, facilities, advising and implementing policy, oversight of volunteers, premises and diaries and safeguarding. To undertake this key role a willingness and empathy to work in a Christian environment is essential.
The Cathedral is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Sodor and Man. The Cathedral is managed by a largely voluntary staff that meets weekly. Oversight is by a council to which the staff report quarterly. The COO is the key figure in enabling the smooth operational life of the Cathedral and implementing the council’s strategy.
For this role we are seeking someone with key communication skills, previous administrative experience and a mature and approachable manner for dealing with members of the public, whilst fostering good relationships with staff and Cathedral officers, other regular contacts (e.g. diocesan officers) and volunteers.
In addition they should be able to demonstrate experience in the following:
- A capacity to work without supervision and the ability to handle multiple tasks and to work to deadlines and able and willing to delegate.
- An ability to prioritise work according to importance and urgency and to work under pressure.
- Reliability and discretion in dealing with sensitive matters and having the highest standards of confidentiality and professionalism
- Empathy with the aims of the Church of England, and ideally some familiarity with the Church’s structures
- A person who will be willing to offer advice as appropriate and implement policies and strategies with which s/he may not agree.
- A person with a flexible and disciplined approach to work and an ability to develop and implement efficient procedures.
- Knowledge of Safeguarding procedures and a commitment to implement the Cathedral’s Safeguarding policies and processes.
In return you will receive:
- Annual salary – £10,000 – £12,000 (£25-30,000k FTE) depending on experience.
- Holidays – Pro rata entitlement of F.T.E. for 25 working days per year (rising to 30 days pro rata after 5 years in post) and prorated 10 Isle of Man Bank/Public Holidays. Up to five days may be carried forward to the following year.

- Support and training where required to fulfil the task.
- Funding to attend the Annual CAFA Conference in England.
