One Hundred and NINETY!

A wonderful celebration this weekend, at the geographical heart of the island,
to celebrate 190 years since the consecration of St Luke’s Chapel, Baldwin.

The Anglican church of St Luke’s will be holding a concert by Caarjyn Cooidjagh at 7.30 on Saturday evening, and a special service with Bishop Tricia at 6.30 on Sunday evening.

In a location with early Celtic roots, the ridge where St Luke’s stands became the site of a Keeill dedicated to St Abban which was shared between two Sheadings, the areas set up by Vikings when they took control of the island.  (Keeill Abban also became the site of the Viking Tynwald assembly for several centuries.)

In the 19th Century the then Bishop of Sodor and Man, Bishop Ward, commissioned one of the chapels with school room for the rural population here, and it was consecrated in 1836 – 190 years ago.

In this beautiful rural location, today’s vision statement of St Luke’s Church is
“Facilitating Encounters with God and Caring for His Creation”.
