This Sunday (18th January) SundayatTen celebrated their 30th anniversary.
Thirty years ago Garth Grinham, vicar of St Ninian’s in Douglas, felt that the Governor’s Hill estate within the parish was rather remote from the main church building, so worked with colleagues from Churches Together in Man (now Churches Alive in Man) to found the group in the Okell’s Brewery pub in 1996.
The church was well-supported by ministers of various denominations – Canon Brendan Alger from the Roman Catholic Church, Rev Leslie Guthrie from St Andrews URC, Rev David Shirtliff from the Methodist church and successive Anglican ministers from St Ninian’s, all helped to establish a welcoming Christian community with a simple liturgy and an informal, respectful style of worship. The church was ably led for many years by Jim and Judy Noakes, then by Rev John and Trisha Guilford.
Currently the church is led by Chris Wildman, Minister in Charge, and is overseen by the Anglican Church while still maintaining an ecumenical flavour, with various guest speakers.
Of today’s celebration Chris says:
“We were delighted to welcome Bishop Tricia to our 30th celebration. We saw over 70 people gathering including guests from other churches and former members from early years. We were also glad to welcome Mr Ollie Neale, Managing Director of Okell’s.

Ensuring we could fit everyone into the main room safely was a great challenge! All went smoothly on the day. St Ninian’s chose to cancel their regular service and join with us, and there was a warm and relaxed atmosphere as we worshipped together. The church expressed its thanks to Okell’s and to the current landlords of the Cat, whose unfailing hospitality over 30 years has enabled the church to flourish.
There were many positive comments about the service from people who were visiting for the occasion, and that was even before we got to the meal …
Our thanks to Brendon and Jenny and the staff who fed us exceptionally well!” ![]()
