The Cathedral

Cathedral Isle of Man

The Mother Church of the Diocese of Sodor and Man is the Cathedral Church of St German,
situated in Peel on the west coast of the island.

The Cathedral is part of the Celtic heritage of Christianity on the Isle of Man, with roots going back to the original cathedral of St German inside the walls of Peel Castle, on St Patrick’s Isle.  Today the cathedral is in the centre of Peel and has an active ministry in the Diocese, the local community, the arts and the environment.  The Cathedral also plays an active part in the Triskelion Way, the island’s pilgrimage route.

The vision of the Cathedral is to:

Be Christ centred & outward looking
Nurture disciples & empower others
Care for creation & exercising sustainable stewardship
Treasure heritage & embrace new opportunities
Welcome all & seek justice

Cathedral worship ranges from glorious diocesan and national celebrations with full choral music, to quiet weekday monastic prayers.  Contact the Cathedral via their Services page for details, and for information about the Cathedral choir.

The Cathedral grounds have been formed into a unique series of interactive gardens which tell the story of the birth and growth of Christianity on the Isle of Man, and also provide a harmonious and beautiful setting in which to walk, relax, and be refreshed.  Among the gardens there are pieces of sculpture, and the Abbey Garden with a paved labyrinth.  The gardens are open to all.  (See the Garden Guide.)
