On New Year’s Day, amidst hail showers and a strong cold wind, Bishop Tricia and Pioneer Minister Rev Alex Brown carried out an open-air baptism service and renewal of vows with members of the Pioneer Church. It was a short contemporary service rooted in the ancient traditions and standing in the heritage of Cabbel Pherrick. It started at the ancient keeill Cabbal Pherick (Patrick’s Chapel) deep in the countryside south of Kirk Michael and then the group descended the steps to Spooyt Vane waterfall for the full immersion baptisms.
Bishop Tricia was in episcopal wear appropriate for the occasion, remarking “They make ’em tough round here. (We had) adult baptisms on New Year’s Day at the Spooyt Vane waterfall which is close to the ancient Keeil, Cabbal Pherick ….. A great way to begin the year and life ahead.”
And, in the same tone, Rev Alex said, “New Year’s Day is a time for making new resolutions about who we want to be and how we want to live, so what better day to pick for a baptism!! It was … bracing … but exhilarating as the three went under the water and declared their baptism vows to those on the water’s edge. What an unforgettable way to spend New Year’s Day.”
The service was completed in Michael Parish Church over hot drinks, cake and biscuits – the Bishop anointing and giving an encouraging homily before signing the Baptism register.
