Obituary – Geoffrey Tattersall KC

The death is announced of Geoffrey Tattersall KC on Sunday 5 January, the Eve of the Feast of the Epiphany, aged 77.

Geoffrey was a remarkable man with a profound legal wisdom who put this to good use here on the Island as Vicar General to the Diocese from 2015-2019 and also as Island’s former Judge of Appeal from 1997-2017.

He was born in Lancashire in 1947 and he was called to the bar in 1970 and appointed Queen’s Council in 1992.

He served also as Diocesan Chancellor in both Carlisle and Manchester and as a chair of the Clergy Disciplinary Tribunal.

Geoffrey loved the Island and his visits here and was always enthusiastic in conversation of Island life and ways.

The Archbishop of York described Geoffrey as ‘very much a gift to us all.’

For many years Geoffrey was a much valued and thoughtful member of the General Synod of the Church of England. With his ready wit and relaxed manner he was a fair and popular chair in Synod debates, most memorably last year at the debate allowing the blessing of same sex couples.

Our love, sympathy and prayers go out to his wife Hazel and their children and families at this time.

May Geoffrey Rest in Peace and Rise in Glory.
