Statement regarding The Reverend Canon Clive Burgess

The Reverend Canon Clive Brian Burgess was suspended in June 2019 to allow for a process under the Clergy Disciplinary Measure to be investigated.  This action has now reached a conclusion and the period of suspension has therefore concluded. Mr Burgess tendered his resignation as Vicar of St Peter’s Church, Onchan, with effect from 15 October 2019 and is currently signed off work for health reasons.

The Reverend Canon Clive Burgess admitted two separate accounts of misconduct under the Clergy Disciplinary Measure for Conduct Unbecoming a Clerk in Holy Orders.

The first case relates to inappropriate use of social media and improper messages sent to 18 year olds, which was incompatible with the values and behaviours expected of a member of the clergy. In relation to this matter Mr Burgess on 3 September 2019 accepted a penalty of resignation from office and a two-year prohibition from ministry.

The second case relates to inappropriate and unprofessional personal behaviour for which Mr Burgess on 3 September 2019 accepted a five-year prohibition from ministry.

Please pray for the people and parish of St Peter’s, Onchan, and for the Reverend Alessandra Di Chiara as the Interim Minister of the parish.

The Diocese will not be making any further comment on this matter.
