Centenary Celebrations in Kenya
The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu last week visited the Diocese of Mbeere, Kenya to mark its Centenary Celebrations at the invitation of The Rt. Revd Dr Moses Masamba Nthukah.
On Friday, Archbishop Sentamu spoke on themes of intentional discipleship at a Wholesome Discipleship Conference, an annual event run by the Diocese of Mbeere to bring together young people and lay ministers from across the Diocese with visitors from East Africa. Later at Siakago Girls National High School, Archbishop Sentamu addressed young people, youth workers and teachers about living life with hope in Jesus Christ.
Archbishop Sentamu then joined in prayers for united witness of the Gospel and in thanksgiving for our reconciliation in Christ at the first and mother church in the Diocese, the Church of the Good Samaritan in Nyangwa, (founded in 1919), at the site of the Cross of Reconciliation.
On Saturday, Archbishop Sentamu led a commissioning service of Sunday school teachers, youth and brigade officers in the cathedral grounds of St Peter's Mbeere, Siakago before visiting the Riandu Secondary School for the Deaf, in heavy rain.
On Sunday, the Archbishop of Kenya, Jackson Ole Sapit, with Archbishop Sentamu and bishops from across Kenya and from Bujumbura, Burundi, shared in a service for the opening and consecration of the ACK Cathedral of St Peter's Mbeere, Siakago. Archbishop Sentamu preached at this service. He said: “I am praying for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit, for all gathered here to call new generations to follow God in Jesus Christ and to be the Good News to Mbeere and beyond. It is a joy to be with people of this Diocese as they celebrate 100 years since the Gospel first reached Mbeere. Hallelujah!”
The ACK Diocese of Mbeere
The Anglican Church of Kenya, Mbeere Diocese, came into existence on 1 July 1997.
